Alzheimer Scotland – East Lothian Services

Alzheimer Scotland provides a wide range of specialist services for people with dementia and their carers. They offer personalised support services, community activities, information and advice, at every stage of the dementia journey.

Service Description

Alzheimer Scotland aims to offer a range of flexible services designed to meet people’s needs in the East Lothian area. If you are interested in any of the services shown below, or simply need someone to talk to, please get in touch using the details found to the right of this description.

You can also contact your local social work department, your GP or Community Mental Health Team.

Post Diagnostic Support

The Scottish Government has guaranteed that every person newly diagnosed with dementia will be offered a minimum of a year’s support from a named and trained person. In East Lothian, Post Diagnostic Support Link Workers are part of the Psychiatry of Older Age East Lothian team.

They can:

  • help you to understand the illness and manage your symptoms
  • support you to keep up your community connections and make new ones
  • help you to plan for future legal and financial decisions
  • help you to plan for your future support and care needs

*Referrals for this service must be made by a Health or Social Care professional.

Dementia Advisor

Dementia Advisors offers advice and support to people with dementia, their families and friends, as well as being involved in awareness raising and dementia-friendly activities in the local community. They can also signpost you to other services in the local area.

Dementia Groups

There are two Dementia Cafés in East Lothian. Both offer a friendly, supportive and stimulating environment for people with dementia and their carers. These take place in Musselburgh and Dunbar.

The cafés are an opportunity to meet others in similar circumstances for advice, information and support—and to make valuable social connections.

D’Cafés are for people with dementia who are able to attend safely on their own or accompanied by a carer. No referral is required.
