Art Therapies
Arts Therapies, including Music Therapy and Art Psychotherapy, are currently available in East Lothian, for anyone aged 18-65 who has been referred to secondary care services provided by the Joint Mental Health Team.
Service Description
Music Therapy is offered in individual or group formats, initially as a 4 – 6-week assessment during which you will be encouraged to explore using the instruments and space and to discuss in what ways Music Therapy might be useful as part of your recovery journey. Once ways of working have been agreed, people usually attend music therapy on a weekly basis for between 6 months to 2 years.
Art Therapy is currently provided through masters level student placements in collaboration with Queen Margaret University. Agreeing on ways of working will be similar to Music Therapy although the length of treatment will be time-limited. This will be discussed and agreed when you first meet your therapist.
Often people find the use of the arts in a therapeutic setting more helpful than words alone. The focus on working within the art form can encourage different ways of exploring relationships, communication and emotions.
Additional Arts Therapies services are available in East Lothian through schools and older adults inpatient services.
